What Is the UK’s and US’s Guinness Consumption Rate
Aside from Irish whiskey, Guinness is one of the most important exports from the independent portion of the island and one of its most well-known brands. In particular, its rich, salty, deep, dry stout may take some getting used to, but it’s nevertheless enjoyed throughout the world, particularly on St. Patrick’s Day. The United States and the United Kingdom are the biggest importers of Irish beer, making up 63 percent of the country’s $313 million overall export value in 2022, according to data from United Nations Comtrade. However, to what extent do people in those nations genuinely enjoy Guinness.
According to recent Statista Consumer Insights polls, 72% of US respondents and 92% of UK respondents, respectively, are familiar with the brand. In the UK, 23% of respondents said they enjoyed the brand, and 19% said they had had at least one pint in the previous 12 months. Only 13% of respondents in the US said they had drank Guinness in the previous year, compared to 16% who were fans of this esteemed beer.
Corona, Bud Light, and Budweiser were the most widely consumed beer brands in the nation; Guinness came in seventh place, behind Coors. Irish beers came in seventh in the UK popularity rankings, after Stella Artois, Budweiser, and Corona.
There have been rumors circulating that the corporation is thinking of selling its Irish breweries, Smithwick’s, Kilkenny, Harp Lager, and East African Breweries under the Tasca Lager brand.
Reports, however, indicate that Guinness hopes to preserve its brand, which is among its best-performing beers globally, by continuing to develop it year after year, particularly in the UK, where it experienced a 7% gain from 2022 levels.
Spirit heavyweight Diageo sold £3.36 billion worth of beer by June 30, 2023, accounting for almost 14% of the company’s overall sales. During this time, nearly 81% of all sales were made by its spirits business.
This development coincides with Diageo’s focus on Guinness, as the company announced last week that 1000 Irish pubs will have non-alcoholic beverages available on tap and plans to invest €25 million (US$27.2 million) to enhance production of Guinness 0.0 at its Saint James’s Gate location.
Although the company does not split its revenues, over the last three fiscal years, it has seen growth in both overall revenue and profit. Diageo’s net profit for the 12 months ending in June 2023 was £3.8 billion, on revenues of £23.5 billion. This represents year-over-year growth of 12.8% and 4.9%, respectively.
