Titans QB Will Levis receives little love in PFF’s QB rankings.
Will Levis, the quarterback for the Tennessee Titans, had a strong rookie campaign. Undoubtedly, there were certain drawbacks, but there were also enough good points for supporters to think he might be the one.
And after seeing Levis’s rookie campaign, that’s exactly how the Titans and new head coach Brian Callahan felt, watching from a distance. Callahan also said that Tennessee’s summer expenditures to bolster Levis’ supporting cast were justified because of the team’s faith in him.
Even though Levis has a bright future, Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus, who ranked the Kentucky product 28th among starting quarterbacks, doesn’t think highly of him. Here’s Sikkema’s logic before we get unreasonable:
My view is fairly straightforward: rookie quarterbacks cannot be ranked higher than quarterbacks who have actually played NFL snaps. Even though Levis’s sample size is little, it’s still one.
Though there are some situations in which a starting quarterback might be so awful that you have to give the rookie the advantage, Levis is by no means one of those quarterbacks.
Players like Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels are ranked higher by Sikkema than Levis. Although we can’t say for sure right now, both may eventually be superior to Levis. There’s also no shortage of gifted quarterbacks who were hyped up and full of potential when they first entered the league, only to falter badly.
Given that Bryce Young had a harsh first season with significantly less positive than Levis, it seems dubious even to rank him ahead of Levis. But Young had the same problem as Levis: a cruel ensemble of supporting characters.
The combination of Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye may be surpassed by Levis by one spot, but Brissett has at least shown himself to be a competent backup quarterback in the NFL.
However, I can certainly argue that Levis should be ranked higher than Brissett because Levis is guaranteed to start in 2024 while Brissett is not.
Nobody is proclaiming that Levis is the newest hot thing or anything similar. While there is still more for him to prove, at least we have some progress with him, which is more than we can say about the previously named rookies.
